Refuge

Creating "Refuge" was a deeply personal and transformative journey for me as an artist. The artwork is an oil painting that depicts a powerful image of Jesus on the cross, brought to life using warm, earthy tones. The hues of brown, gold, and yellow infuse the piece with a richness that mirrors the intensity of the subject matter.
In this piece, I sought to capture the expressive emotion of Jesus in a moment of profound suffering and sacrifice. The crown of thorns that adorns His head serves as a poignant reminder of His endurance and grace. For me, the human form, the underlying emotions, and the connection between the foreground and background are central to conveying this dramatic narrative. By blending the figure with the background, I aimed to create a seamless flow that draws the viewer into this intense and sacred moment.

"Refuge" is deeply inspired by my love for God's grace. This theme runs as an undercurrent throughout the entire piece, guiding my choice of composition and color palette. This artwork is not only a reflection of my faith but also an exploration of the beauty and depth of spiritual devotion.

A unique element in the process of creating "Refuge" was my use of copper leafing as a base. This choice not only added a distinctive warmth and glow to the painting but also symbolized the enduring, precious nature of the narrative I sought to convey. The copper leafing interacts beautifully with the oil medium, creating layers of depth and shimmer that shift with the light.

"Refuge" is more than just an expression of artistic endeavor; it is an invitation to viewers to explore themes of faith, sacrifice, and the grace that is ever-present, even in moments of profound trial. My hope is that this artwork serves as a solace and inspiration to all who encounter it.
